Student Residence Construction Milestones Achieved
It’s hard to believe that nearly eight months have passed since the groundbreaking of the Student Residence. Back in December the snow-covered site was notable only for the huge hole that marked the spot where the residence would be built.
Today the temporary elevator and hoist for moving personnel and construction materials into the building is visible from the street and should be completed by June 27 (see image A).
The concrete work in the tenth floor mechanical area, also known as the penthouse, is now complete. The roof tie-downs will be completed by June 24, this is an important step in the roof installation process. The ninth floor is being handed off to the general construction team to start the layout.
The mock-up of the student residence façade has been started (see image B). The mockup allows the Boston Redevelopment Authority to review the outside finishes of the building.
Work has begun on the underground services that support the electrical requirements of the building while connecting the sewer discharge from the residence to Boston Water and Sewer is now complete.
Please keep in mind that the Albany Street road work has begun.
The nine-story, $40 million structure is designed by Beacon Architectural Associates with a brick and limestone façade. Its 104 two-bedroom suites that include bath, kitchenette and living spaces will accommodate 208 students, each with individual bedrooms, the standard for graduate student housing. Walsh Brothers is the contractor for the building, which is expected to take 18 months to complete.
