Pediatric Interest Group, BUSM Students Join ‘Families Belong Together’ Rally
Despite scorching temperatures, BUSM students and members of the Pediatrics Education and Development Society (PEDS) joined thousands of people at Boston’s “Families Belong Together” rally on Saturday, June 30 in Boston.
Hundreds of “Families Belong Together” events were held around the country over the weekend to protest the nearly 2,000 migrant children currently separated from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Wearing their white coats, students gathered with fellow demonstrators at City Hall Plaza carrying signs that read, “Protect the Children,” “Immigrants Make America Great,” and “Separating Families is Bad for Health.”
“They are ensuring that BUSM is heard and visible for these important events,” said Robert Vinci, MD, Joel and Barbara Alpert Professor of Pediatrics at BUSM and chief of pediatrics at Boston Medical Center (BMC).
PEDS is a career interest group dedicated to connecting students with an interest in pediatrics, educating them about the field, and providing mentor and community outreach opportunities through monthly lunch talks. PEDS also gives students the opportunity to volunteer at BMC in pediatrics throughout the year and participate in the Child Health and Advocacy Project, a paid summer service-learning experience for BUSM students interested in pediatrics and urban advocacy.
The PEDS group also attended the Women’s March and the March for Our Lives events in Boston earlier this year.
