Our Mission
The Diversity and Inclusion Office encourages and supports the educational and working environment of students, faculty, and staff in order to have a positive effect on the health experiences of diverse communities. Consequently, the Diversity and Inclusion Office will support and promote all research efforts that recognize and value diversity and inclusion as a tool to reduce health inequities and improve the health of historically marginalized and underserved populations.
Diversity and equity are essential to the development of future leaders in healthcare and research; they enrich intellectual development, academic discourse, patient care, and research. Our office commits to developing innovative programs that educate, recruit, and retain a diverse, multicultural community of faculty, students, staff, and trainees.

Pathway Programs
The Pathway Programs at Boston University’s Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine aim to create an inclusive, equitable environment that supports underrepresented students, trainees, and professionals in their educational and career journeys. These programs span many opportunities, including pathway initiatives for high school and undergraduate students, research-focused experiences for post-baccalaureates and graduate students, and mentorship and professional development for medical and biomedical science trainees.
Key offerings include the AHA SURE program, BU STaRs, and PREP, which provide hands-on research opportunities and mentorship. Additional initiatives, such as the Early Medical School Selection Program (EMSSP) and ACS DICR Post-baccalaureate Fellows Program, focus on fostering diversity in medical and cancer research. Programs like SPIN and BEAMS expose students to neuroscience and STEM careers, while the BU-BMC Summer Science Scholars Program engages high school students in scientific research.
These initiatives are integral to BU’s mission of enhancing diversity in medicine and health sciences by cultivating a pipeline of talented, motivated individuals committed to addressing health equity and advancing inclusive excellence. Through these programs, participants gain the skills, experiences, and networks needed to succeed in academic and professional careers in STEM and healthcare.
