Brockton Hospital, located approximately 20 miles southwest of Boston, is a general community hospital offering a full range of services. It has 300 beds and admits approximately 10,000 patients per year. Its active emergency room receives more than 45,000 visits annually.
The surgical service consists of 60 beds supervised by the chief of surgery and the attending surgical staff. The faculty consists of general and thoracic surgeons who are on the teaching faculty at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and who practice surgery full-time in the area. The operative experience for residents is extensive with exposure to most procedures in general, laparoscopic, and thoracic surgery.
An active emergency room and surgical clinic provide a rich source of patients for the University Service. Patients of the thoracic surgical service, gynecologic surgical service, and the neurosurgical service are cared for by the surgical residents. Brockton Hospital also has a strong residency program in internal medicine based at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, as well as a free-standing internship program.
Surgical rounds are conducted daily with the senior residents, and a service meeting is held weekly for discussion of morbidity and mortality. Walk rounds are held weekly with the Chief of Surgery. Conferences held each Monday alternate between GI, vascular, and trauma surgery; once a month the conference is conducted by a professor of surgery from Boston Medical Center.
All surgical specialties are represented at Brockton Hospital, except for open heart surgery and organ transplantation. Medical students rotate here on a monthly basis as part of the third-year teaching program in surgery. [Link to Brockton Hospital’s web page]
